Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Context:

  • Solanum torvum, a widely used medicinal plant, has not been fully characterized for its chemical constituents.
  • Understanding the phytochemical profile of S. torvum is crucial for its ethnobotanical and pharmacological applications.

Purpose:

  • To isolate and elucidate the chemical structures of compounds present in the aerial parts of Solanum torvum.
  • To identify novel or previously unreported chemical constituents from this plant species.

Summary:

  • Six triterpenes were successfully isolated from the 95% alcohol extract of S. torvum aerial parts.
  • The identified triterpenes include 3beta-acetyloleanolic acid, 3-O-acetyl-11alpha, 12alpha-epoxy-oleanan-28, 13beta-olide, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, 2alpha-hydroxy-oleanolic acid, and 2alpha, 3beta-dihydroxyursolic acid.
  • Structural determination was achieved using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) techniques.

Impact:

  • This research reports the first isolation of these six triterpenes from Solanum torvum.
  • The findings contribute to the phytochemical knowledge of S. torvum, potentially aiding in the discovery of new bioactive compounds.
