Summary

The ventral conchal bulla (VCB), part of the equine ventral conchal sinus (VCS), is identifiable on plain radiographs. Lateral views offer the best diagnostic accuracy for VCB identification in horses.

Background:

  • The ventral conchal sinus (VCS) is crucial in equine sinus disease diagnosis and prognosis.
  • The ventral conchal bulla (VCB), a caudal extension of the VCS, requires clear identification for accurate diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if the ventral conchal bulla (VCB) is identifiable on plain radiographs of equine cadaver skulls.
  • To assess the accuracy and ease of VCB identification across different radiographic views.

Main Methods:

  • Ten equine cadaver skulls underwent bilateral frontonasal sinus flaps.
  • Radiographs (lateral, lateral oblique, dorso-ventral) were taken, with and without wire markers for the VCB.
  • Two observers blindly evaluated VCB identification, correlating with true positions.

Main Results:

  • The VCB was correctly identified in 70% of lateral radiographs, 45% of lateral oblique, and 17% of dorso-ventral views.
  • Confident VCB identification correlated with accuracy, while 'difficult' assessments often led to errors.
