This study presents a rare case of a large blue nevus on the hard palate. Surgical excision without biopsy proved effective, showing no recurrence or malignant changes after two years.
Area of Science:
- Oral pathology
- Dermatology
- Oncology
Background:
- Nevi are congenital pigmented malformations, infrequently occurring in the oral mucosa.
- Blue nevi, a histological subtype, represent about one-third of oral nevi and possess a notable potential for malignancy.
Observation:
- A case report details a 5 cm blue nevus on the hard palate of a male patient with a history of chronic smoking.
- The management decision favored complete excision over incisional biopsy due to existing literature controversies regarding biopsy of potentially malignant pigmented lesions.
Findings:
- The patient underwent surgical excision of the blue nevus.
- A two-year follow-up revealed no evidence of lesion recurrence or malignant transformation.
Implications:
- This case supports the efficacy of primary surgical excision for large oral blue nevi, particularly when malignancy potential is a concern.
- The findings contribute to the understanding of managing rare oral pigmented lesions and highlight the importance of individualized treatment strategies.
