These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary

Chronic cigarette smoking alters white matter integrity, particularly in the bilateral fronto-parietal tracts like the superior longitudinal fasciculus. These changes in white matter connectivity are detectable in long-term smokers.
