Immunodeficiency Diseases01:25

Immunodeficiency Diseases

Immunodeficiency disorders are conditions in which the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease and cancer is compromised or entirely absent. The immune system comprises a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from potentially harmful invaders. When this system is deficient or not functioning properly, it leaves the body susceptible to infections, diseases, or other complications.
There are three main causes of immunodeficiency disorders...
Retrovirus Life Cycles01:10

Retrovirus Life Cycles

Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the retrovirus to...

International Nursing Organizations I

International Nursing Organization (ICN) is a global union of national nurses' organizations. Individual nurses can be a part of ICN through member organizations. Each member organization strives to ensure quality nursing care, sound health policies, the advancement of nursing knowledge, respect for the profession, and a satisfied and competent nursing workforce.
ICN member organizations work to advance the field of nursing and healthcare via policies, partnerships, lobbying, professional...

Summary

This study mapped nursing terms for children with HIV/AIDS in developing countries to the International Classification of Nursing Practice. Over 80% of local terms partially or perfectly fit the classification, improving global nursing language consistency.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Global Health
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • The International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP) provides a unified global language for nursing.
  • Developing standardized nursing terminologies is crucial for consistent patient care.
  • HIV/AIDS in children in developing countries is a significant global health priority.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and map nursing diagnoses/outcomes and intervention terms used for children with HIV/AIDS in developing countries to the ICNP.
  • To assess the fit of local nursing terms within the ICNP framework.
  • To contribute to the development of a condition-specific ICNP subset for pediatric HIV/AIDS care.

Main Methods:

  • Identification of nursing diagnosis/outcome and intervention terms used by nurses for children with HIV/AIDS.
  • Mapping of identified local terms to the International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP).
  • Categorization of term matches as perfect fit, conceptual fit, partial fit, or unable to fit, following ICNP Catalogue Development Guidelines.

Main Results:

  • A subset of 53 nursing diagnosis/outcome terms and 85 intervention terms was developed.
  • Eighty-two percent of the identified local terms mapped at least partially to the ICNP.
  • The study identified terms across various healthcare phases, including health promotion, maintenance, acute/chronic conditions, and end-of-life care.

Conclusions:

  • Mapping local nursing terms to the ICNP facilitates a more consistent and unified global nursing language for pediatric HIV/AIDS care.
  • The developed subset supports the application of ICNP in specific clinical contexts, enhancing nursing practice and research.
  • Further development of condition-specific ICNP subsets can improve the standardization and quality of nursing interventions worldwide.
