Summary
Implementing classroom physical activity (PA) breaks, like Instant Recess®, effectively increased student PA and on-task behavior in elementary schools. This intervention supports academic engagement without sacrificing instructional time.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Health
- Educational Interventions
- Public Health Policy
Background:
- Rising childhood obesity rates necessitate school-based physical activity (PA) policies.
- Interventions must boost activity without compromising academic learning time.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a policy implementation intervention aimed at increasing in-school PA.
- The study focused on elementary schools in Forsyth County, North Carolina, using a randomized delayed intervention design.
Main Methods:
- The study involved third- to fifth-grade classrooms across eight elementary schools.
- Instant Recess® provided 10-minute PA breaks scheduled by teachers.
- Direct observation assessed student and teacher behaviors related to PA.
Main Results:
- Classroom-based PA increased significantly in intervention schools and was sustained.
- Students in classrooms with Instant Recess showed significant increases in light-intensity (51%) and moderate-intensity (16%) PA.
- On-task behavior increased by 11% in intervention classrooms; control schools saw similar benefits after implementation.
Conclusions:
- Instant Recess® is effective for enhancing PA and improving student behavior in elementary schools.
- Further research is needed on policies supporting classroom activity breaks and adherence assessment.

Reflex Activity
A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort.

Exercise and Muscle Performance
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Inclusive Fitness
Most altruistic behavior—in which one animal helps another at a cost to themselves—occurs between relatives. Scientists think these altruistic behaviors evolved because they increase the inclusive fitness of the animal providing help.
