Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) implantation improved hearing in patients with sensorineural or conductive hearing loss. Post-surgery, auditory thresholds significantly increased, with no adverse effects reported.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Sensorineural and conductive hearing loss significantly impact quality of life.
  • Traditional hearing aids are not always effective for all types of hearing loss.

Observation:

  • Two patients with sensorineural or conductive hearing loss (microtia) underwent Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) implantation.
  • Preoperative auditory thresholds were 56 dB HL and 61 dB HL.
  • The VSB system was activated and adjusted seven weeks post-surgery.

Findings:

  • Postoperative pure tone thresholds improved to 32 dB HL and 40 dB HL, representing a 24 dB HL and 21 dB HL improvement, respectively.
  • No instances of facial paralysis, vertigo, or tinnitus were observed.
  • The VSB system demonstrated a positive effect on auditory function.

Implications:

  • Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) implantation is a viable option for patients with sensorineural or conductive hearing loss.
  • The VSB system offers significant audiological benefits without major complications.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to confirm these findings.
