Area of Science:

  • Physiological monitoring
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Biomedical signal processing

Context:

  • Visual display terminal (VDT) use is prevalent, often leading to mental fatigue.
  • Objective diagnostic tools for VDT-induced mental fatigue are currently lacking.
  • Understanding the physiological correlates of mental fatigue is crucial for workplace health.

Purpose:

  • To identify objective physiological indicators for diagnosing and evaluating mental fatigue induced by VDT use.
  • To analyze temperature and electrocardiograph (ECG) signals for reliable fatigue markers.
  • To compare physiological changes during and after a VDT mental fatigue task.

Summary:

  • Subjects underwent a VDT mental fatigue task while temperature and ECG signals were recorded.

  • Analysis focused on time-domain temperature, and time/frequency-domain ECG parameters like heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV).
  • Significant changes in temperature (increase) and RR-PNN50 (increase) and S wavelet (decrease) were observed post-fatigue, with further changes upon recovery.
  • Impact:

    • This research offers a promising approach to developing objective diagnostic tools for VDT mental fatigue.
    • Identified physiological markers (temperature, RR-PNN50, S wavelet) could inform fatigue assessment and management strategies.
    • Findings contribute to understanding the physiological impact of prolonged VDT use and developing healthier work environments.
