Insights
Early ultrasound can detect gastroschisis, a congenital abdominal wall defect, as early as 11 weeks. While this prenatal diagnosis doesn't change treatment or outcomes, it enables timely parental counseling.
Area of Science:
- Perinatology
- Fetal Medicine
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Gastroschisis is a congenital anomaly characterized by an opening in the abdominal wall, leading to intestinal evisceration.
- Prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis is crucial for planning delivery and neonatal care.
Observation:
- A case of gastroschisis was suspected via sonography at 11 weeks and 3 days of gestation.
- This represents a very early detection of the condition.
Findings:
- Early sonographic detection of gastroschisis is feasible.
- The timing of diagnosis does not influence prenatal management strategies.
Implications:
- While early detection does not alter neonatal outcomes, it facilitates prompt genetic counseling for expectant parents.
- Informing parents early about gastroschisis allows for better preparation and informed decision-making throughout the pregnancy.
Abstract:
We report a case of gastroschisis that was suspected at sonography at 11 weeks + 3 days of amenorrhea. Although early detection does not alter prenatal management of this condition nor does it affect neonatal outcome, it allows early counseling of the parents.
