Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Audiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Hearing impairment is a significant concern in pre-school and school-age children.
  • Early identification and intervention are crucial for optimal child development and educational outcomes.

Framework:

  • A consensus statement and policy recommendations for structured hearing screening programs in European children were developed.
  • Key elements include defining program roles, identifying target populations, and establishing quality control systems.

Implementation:

  • The consensus was formed by a panel of experts in audiology and related fields at the 10th Congress of the European Federation of Audiology Societies (EFAS).
  • The statement will be presented to European Union Member States for adoption and implementation.

Implications:

  • The European Consensus Statement aims to promote the initiation and standardization of hearing screening programs across Europe.
  • Effective programs will facilitate the early detection and management of hearing problems in children, improving their long-term health and educational trajectories.
