Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...
Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Summary

A brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) intervention significantly improved physical symptoms and disability in patients with chronic subjective dizziness. This 3-session treatment offers a simple, cost-effective solution for managing dizziness-related issues.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Medical Research

Background:

  • Chronic subjective dizziness significantly impacts patients' quality of life.
  • Existing treatments may not fully address the physical and functional aspects of dizziness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) intervention for chronic subjective dizziness.
  • To assess the impact of CBT on physical symptoms, disability, and psychologic distress.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-one patients with chronic subjective dizziness were randomized to immediate CBT or a wait-list control.
  • A 3-session CBT intervention, adapted from panic disorder treatment, was administered.
  • Outcomes measured included dizziness-related disability, physical symptoms, safety behaviors, and psychologic distress.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in disability (Dizziness Handicap Inventory) and physical symptoms (Dizziness Symptoms Inventory) were observed.
  • Avoidance and safety behaviors decreased significantly (Safety Behaviours Inventory).
  • No significant changes were found in psychologic distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales).

Conclusions:

  • A brief, 3-session CBT intervention effectively improves dizziness-related symptoms, disability, and functional impairment.
  • This psychologic approach offers a potentially simple and cost-effective treatment for chronic subjective dizziness.
  • CBT may be a valuable therapeutic option for managing the multifaceted aspects of chronic dizziness.
