Association between arterial stiffness and pulmonary function in hypertensive patients

Arterial stiffness, measured by cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), is linked to poorer lung function and older pulmonary age in hypertensive patients. Monitoring CAVI may help predict chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) progression.

- CAVI correlated significantly with FEV1/FVC ratio (r=-0.399) and pulmonary age (r=0.559).
- CAVI was independently associated with reduced FEV1/FVC ratio (β=-0.418) and increased pulmonary age (β=0.514).
- Patients with higher pulmonary age exhibited significantly higher CAVI.
Conclusions:
- Increased CAVI is independently linked to diminished pulmonary function and advanced pulmonary age.
- Hypertensive patients with elevated CAVI may require monitoring for COPD progression.
