Background:

  • HIV/AIDS is transitioning into a manageable chronic condition.
  • Effective management of HIV requires specialized medical training.
  • Current medical curricula may not adequately prepare future physicians for HIV care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the preparedness of final-year medical students in Hong Kong for providing HIV care.
  • To identify student perceptions regarding HIV infection risk and willingness to manage patients.
  • To evaluate the impact of clinical attachments on student exposure to HIV patients.

Main Methods:

  • A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from three cohorts of final-year medical students (n=391).
  • The questionnaire assessed perceived preparedness, risk of infection, and willingness to manage HIV patients.
  • Data on clinical exposure to HIV patients was also collected.

Main Results:

  • 53% of students felt better prepared to provide HIV care and perceived a lower risk of infection.
  • A significant minority (4.6%) expressed unwillingness to manage HIV patients.
  • 72.8% of students had their first direct encounter with HIV patients during a specially-designed clinic attachment.

Conclusions:

  • While a majority of students feel prepared, a substantial portion lacks direct experience with HIV patients.
  • Clinical attachments are vital for exposing medical students to HIV care.
  • There is a need to enhance HIV medicine curriculum development to address the evolving nature of HIV/AIDS.
