Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the rate at which patients with lower limb amputations return to driving cars and riding motorcycles.
  • To identify key factors influencing the ability to resume driving or riding post-amputation.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 90 participants with lower limb amputations, who previously drove or rode, were surveyed.
  • Data on return to driving/riding, demographics, and influencing factors were collected using a structured questionnaire.
  • Diabetic foot complications were the primary cause of amputation in 75.6% of participants.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 45.6% of participants resumed driving/riding between 1 to 72 months post-amputation.
  • Male gender and prosthesis use were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of returning to driving/riding.
  • Primary barriers included concerns from family members, co-existing medical conditions, and diminished patient confidence.

  • The rate of return to driving/riding after lower limb amputation is notably low.
  • Rehabilitation programs should actively address family concerns and enhance patient confidence to improve driving/riding resumption rates.
