Abstract

Insights

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) genotype 2 and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genotype 1 are highly prevalent in peri-implantitis. Their presence correlates with clinical signs, suggesting a role in disease development.

Area of Science:

  • Oral microbiology
  • Virology
  • Periodontology

Background:

  • Peri-implantitis and mucositis are common complications of dental implants.
  • The role of herpesviruses, such as HCMV and EBV, in these conditions is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of HCMV and EBV genotypes in peri-implantitis and mucositis.
  • To investigate the association between herpesvirus genotypes and clinical indicators of peri-implant disease.

Main Methods:

  • 80 dental implants were assessed, including sites with peri-implantitis, mucositis, and healthy tissue.
  • Clinical parameters like plaque index, bleeding, suppuration, and probing depth were recorded.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect HCMV and EBV genotypes in plaque samples.

Main Results:

  • HCMV genotype 2 was found in 53.3% and EBV genotype 1 in 46.6% of peri-implantitis sites.
  • These genotypes were rarely detected in healthy peri-implant sites.
  • A significant correlation was observed between HCMV-2, EBV-1, and peri-implantitis clinical parameters.

Conclusions:

  • HCMV genotype 2 and EBV genotype 1 show high prevalence in peri-implantitis.
  • These viruses may play an active role in the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis.
