Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Thymic malignancies are rare, with invasive thymoma requiring aggressive management.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 41-year-old male presented with chest pain and cough, diagnosed with invasive thymoma.
  • A 6x9 cm tumor in the left thymus lobe invaded adjacent vital structures.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection included the left innominate vein, pericardium, and left lung upper lobe.
  • Pathology confirmed thymic squamous cell carcinoma with mediastinal lymph node metastasis.
  • Postoperative treatment involved radiation therapy and adjuvant chemotherapy with CDDP.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the successful multimodal treatment of advanced thymic squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Complete resection and adjuvant therapy can lead to long-term remission in patients with invasive thymic tumors.
