Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an infobutton for automatically retrieving PubMed papers relevant to online clinical discussions.
  • To supplement clinical conversations with pertinent medical literature using knowledge linkages.

Main Methods:

  • Grouping clinical messages into threads.
  • Processing threads with Metamap to identify Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) keywords.
  • Employing a novel search strategy using keywords to retrieve papers from PubMed.

Main Results:

  • The knowledge linkage model significantly outperformed vector space and extended Boolean models in precision (p=0.013, 0.003) and recall (p=0.351, 0.013).
  • Relevant papers were successfully retrieved for over 55% of discussion threads.
  • Demonstrated improved retrieval of evidence-based research for clinical communication.

Conclusions:

  • The developed infobutton effectively supplements peer communication with evidence-based research.
  • Future work should refine threading and keyword-mapping strategies for enhanced performance.
