Workplace physical activity is low and sedentary behavior is high, with common measurement methods including questionnaires and objective sensors. While many studies didn't assess validity, instruments generally show moderate to strong reliability and validity.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and review methods for assessing physical activity and sedentary behavior at the workplace.
  • To evaluate the validity and reliability of these assessment measures.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases (MEDLINE, SPORT Discus, ProQuest, Google Scholar) for studies published between 1990 and 2009.
  • Included studies focused on validated measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior at work, categorizing them into criterion standards, objective, and subjective measures.
  • Eleven relevant papers were identified and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Self-report surveys and questionnaires were the most common data collection methods.
  • Objective measures indicated low physical activity (4,422–10,334 steps/day) and high sedentary time (1.8–6 hours/day).
  • Self-report data suggested approximately 0.5 h/d of physical activity and over 3 h/d of sitting time at work.

Conclusions:

  • Physical activity levels at work are generally low, while sedentary behavior is prevalent, influenced by occupation type (e.g., white-collar vs. blue-collar).
  • Although direct assessment of validity and reliability was lacking in the included studies, external evaluations suggest moderate to strong validity and reliability for the instruments used.
