  • Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with significant bone density abnormalities in adults.
  • These skeletal complications are less understood in adolescent populations with AN.
  • Early identification of bone loss is crucial for long-term skeletal health.

Purpose:

  • To determine the frequency and severity of bone mineralization abnormalities in adolescent females with AN.
  • To identify potential predictive factors for these skeletal complications.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 39 female adolescents with AN, assessing bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
  • Over half (51%) had osteopenia, and 5% had osteoporosis. BMD Z-scores did not correlate with assessed clinical or biological parameters.
  • However, absolute BMD values correlated with age at onset, BMI, lowest weight, and BMI at densitometry, with age at onset being the only significant predictor in multivariate analysis.

Impact:

  • Bone loss is a significant complication of AN that can manifest during adolescence.
  • Systematic screening for bone density deficits is recommended in all adolescents with severe malnutrition.
  • No specific clinical predictor for osteoporosis or osteopenia was identified, highlighting the need for universal screening.
