    Background:

    • Chronic schizophrenia requires ongoing management to prevent relapse and maintain community living.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of group follow-up as an aftercare intervention for chronic schizophrenia.
    • To compare rehospitalization rates and community tenure before and during group aftercare.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of 15 outpatient schizophrenic patients.
    • Comparison of 2-year periods: pre-group aftercare versus group aftercare.
    • Analysis of rehospitalization rates and time spent in the community.

    • Rehospitalization rates decreased from 1.1 admissions/patient year pre-group to 0.2 admissions/patient year during group therapy (p < .001).
