Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...
Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...
Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...
Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Summary

Weight regain was similar between gourmet cooking and neurolinguistic programming (NLP) therapy groups after initial weight loss. However, the cooking course had a significantly lower dropout rate than NLP therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Obesity Research
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Weight regain is a significant challenge following successful weight loss.
  • Behavior modification strategies are crucial for long-term weight management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of a gourmet cooking course versus neurolinguistic programming (NLP) therapy on weight regain.
  • To assess long-term weight maintenance and dropout rates associated with each intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Overweight and obese subjects (n=56) underwent a 12-week weight loss program.
  • Participants achieving ≥8% weight loss were randomized to 5 months of either NLP therapy or a gourmet cooking course.
  • Follow-up assessments were conducted at 2 and 3 years.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in weight maintenance between the NLP and cooking groups at 2-3 year follow-up.
  • The NLP group lost an additional 1.8 kg, while the cooking group lost 0.2 kg during the 5-month maintenance phase (NS).
  • Dropout rate was significantly lower in the cooking group (4%) compared to the NLP group (26%, p=0.04).

Conclusions:

  • Both gourmet cooking courses and NLP therapy are equally effective for maintaining weight loss in overweight and obese individuals.
  • A gourmet cooking course may be a more suitable intervention due to a lower dropout rate compared to NLP therapy.
