Summary

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) effectively treats chronic low back pain in failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients. Laminectomy-style thoracic electrodes showed superior long-term pain relief compared to percutaneous leads.

  • 75% of patients (12/16) with permanent implants reported sustained pain relief (>50%) at long-term follow-up.
  • Laminectomy-style thoracic electrodes yielded >50% pain relief in all six patients.

Conclusions:

  • Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a viable treatment for chronic low back and lower extremity pain unresponsive to conservative or surgical options.
  • Laminectomy-style thoracic electrodes appear more effective for long-term pain management in FBSS patients than percutaneous leads.
  • Further research with larger patient cohorts is warranted to confirm these findings.
