Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Summary

This case study details a rare primary clear cell sarcoma of the humerus in a young woman. Limb salvage surgery combined with chemotherapy proved effective, showing no metastasis after two years.

Background:

  • Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare soft tissue malignancy typically arising in extremities.
  • Primary bone involvement of CCS is exceptionally uncommon, with most cases being metastatic.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old female presented with a painless, aggressive, osteolytic lesion in the proximal right humerus.
  • Radiography revealed an ill-defined lesion with cortical destruction, and MRI showed an extraosseous mass invading surrounding muscles.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed nests of polygonal and fusiform cells with clear cytoplasm, characteristic of clear cell sarcoma.
  • Immunohistochemistry showed strong S-100 and scattered HMB-45 positivity, supporting the diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This report highlights that primary clear cell sarcoma can originate within the humerus.
  • Successful limb salvage surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy demonstrate a viable treatment strategy for this rare tumor, achieving a favorable prognosis.
