Area of Science:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is the standard for benign adrenal pathology.
  • This study refines and documents the surgical approach.
  • Experience spans January 1997 to February 2010.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document the experience and outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To evaluate the safety and feasibility of the procedure.
  • To highlight the benefits of minimally invasive surgery for adrenal conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 306 patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • Data collected included indications, operative time, blood loss, hospital stay, and complications.
  • Transperitoneal lateral approach was utilized.

Main Results:

  • Median operative time: 95 minutes; median blood loss: 60 mL.
  • Mean gland size: 5.9 cm; mean tumor size: 5 cm.
  • Common pathologies: adenoma (164), pheochromocytoma (79), hyperplasia (35).
  • Low complication rate: 1 pulmonary embolism, 2 pneumonias; 2 conversions to open surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe and feasible surgical approach.
  • It offers the advantages of minimally invasive surgery for adrenal pathology.
  • The procedure is well-tolerated with a low complication rate.
