  • Understanding AAA natural history is crucial as different stages may involve distinct biological processes and biomarkers.
  • Investigating systemic biomarkers of inflammation and extracellular matrix remodeling is essential for comprehending AAA progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between systemic biomarkers of inflammation and extracellular matrix remodeling and aneurysm size in patients with AAA.
  • To identify potential biomarkers that correlate with different stages of abdominal aortic aneurysm development.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective inclusion of consecutive patients from surgical clinics.
  • Classification of patients into small (30-44 mm), medium (45-54 mm), and large (≥ 55 mm) AAA groups.
  • Linear regression modeling, adjusted for statin use and study center, to analyze associations between biomarkers and aneurysm size.

Main Results:

  • Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and age were positively associated with AAA size.
  • Serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations were negatively associated with AAA size.
  • Men generally presented with larger aneurysms compared to women, independent of other factors.

Conclusions:

  • Distinct expression patterns of HDL, IgG, and hsCRP were observed across different abdominal aortic aneurysm sizes.
  • These identified biomarkers hold potential utility in predicting the progression of AAA.
  • Further research into these biomarkers could enhance clinical management and risk stratification for AAA patients.
