Enteric viral pathogens in children with inflammatory bowel disease

Enteral viruses like norovirus and sapovirus were not detected in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study suggests these viruses play a minor role in IBD development or exacerbations.

- Patients were categorized into IBD groups (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis) and a non-IBD control group.

- Viral RNA was detected in three fecal samples (2 norovirus GII, 1 sapovirus).
- All detected viral RNA was found in children without IBD.
- No viral RNA was identified in children diagnosed with IBD.
Conclusions:
- Enteral viruses, including norovirus and sapovirus, do not appear to be a significant factor in pediatric IBD.
- The findings suggest that enteral viruses play a minor role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.
