Summary

Anterior cervical fusion using trabecular metal significantly alters cervical spine motion. Patients show distinct quantitative and qualitative differences in axial rotation and lateral bending compared to healthy individuals.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences (p < 0.01) in the main motion component during axial rotation and lateral bending were observed.
  • Coupled lateral bending motion also differed significantly during axial rotation.
  • Qualitative kinematic aspects, including jerkiness and deviation from smoothed functions, were significantly different (p < 0.05) between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Anterior cervical fusion with trabecular metal leads to significant quantitative and qualitative changes in cervical kinematics.
  • These kinematic differences are evident during active axial rotation and lateral bending.
  • The study highlights altered movement patterns in patients post-fusion.
