Summary

Fine needle aspiration of peripheral lymph nodes revealed Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 3.02% of cases. Tuberculous lymph nodes were most common in younger patients and in the neck/supraclavicular regions.

Area of Science:

  • Cytopathology
  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Context:

  • Analysis of 2,414 fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens from peripheral lymph nodes.
  • Study conducted between 1979 and 1989 at the Cytologic Laboratory of the Clinic for Lung Diseases "Jordanovac" in Zagreb.
  • Involved 2,287 patients.

Purpose:

  • To determine the incidence and characteristics of tuberculous lymphadenitis diagnosed via FNA.
  • To identify cytomorphological features suggestive of granulomatous reaction with necrosis in lymph node aspirates.
  • To correlate findings with patient demographics and lymph node location.

Summary:

  • 150 (6.2%) aspirates showed granulomatous reaction with necrosis.
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed in 73 (3.02%) of these aspirates.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Tuberculous lymphadenitis predominantly affected patients under 40 years old (63%) and was most frequent in the neck and supraclavicular areas (91.8%).
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the diagnostic utility of FNA in identifying tuberculous lymphadenitis.
    • Provides epidemiological data on tuberculosis affecting peripheral lymph nodes in the studied region and period.
    • Informs clinical suspicion and diagnostic approaches for lymphadenopathy, particularly in endemic areas.
