Repressed Memory01:16

Repressed Memory

Repressed memories are a psychological phenomenon where memories of traumatic events are unconsciously blocked from a person's awareness. This process occurs as a defense mechanism, protecting the mind from the emotional impact of distressing or painful experiences. For example, a person who has experienced childhood trauma may grow up with no conscious recollection of the event. In such cases, the memories are thought to be buried deep within the subconscious, inaccessible to the conscious...
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...
Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual remembers mundane...

Summary

Imagery rescripting (IRS) effectively reduced intrusive memories and negative cognitions after aversive stimuli. This early intervention shows promise for preventing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop if trauma is not processed or is negatively appraised.
  • Mental imagery and emotional processing are linked, with treatments like EMDR and imaginal exposure incorporating imagery.
  • Imagery rescripting of traumatic memories is an established PTSD treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of early imagery rescripting (IRS) on the development of intrusive memories following an aversive film.
  • To compare IRS with imagery reexperiencing (IRE) and positive imagery (PI) interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-six participants were randomly assigned to IRS, IRE, or PI conditions.
  • Participants viewed an aversive film, took a break, and received a 9-minute intervention.
  • Measures included subjective distress, intrusive memories, Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory (PTCI), and cued recall.

Main Results:

  • The IRS group had fewer intrusive memories and less negative cognitions than IRE and PI groups.
  • Cued recall was enhanced in IRS and IRE groups compared to the PI group.
  • IRS and PI groups reported less distress during the intervention than the IRE group.

Conclusions:

  • Early imagery rescripting (IRS) may alter memory consolidation, potentially preventing PTSD symptoms.
  • IRS appears to be a powerful and non-distressing strategy for early intervention.
  • Further research is needed to replicate these findings in clinical populations.
