Background:

  • Asthma and rhinitis frequently coexist, potentially worsening asthma severity and impacting patient quality of life.
  • Limited research exists on asthma severity combined with rhinitis symptoms using International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between current rhinitis/rhinoconjunctivitis and the development or increased severity of asthma in Brazilian adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • Correlated prevalence of current asthma with current rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis in 13-14 year olds across 16 Brazilian centers using Spearman's rank correlation.
  • Assessed the influence of rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis on asthma presentation via chi-squared tests, reporting odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive correlations found between current asthma and current rhinitis (rs = 0.82) and rhinoconjunctivitis (rs = 0.75).
  • Current rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis were significantly associated with an increased risk of current asthma and more severe asthma presentations.

Conclusions:

  • Current rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis are linked to a high risk of asthma development and increased severity in Brazilian adolescents.
