Background:

A plunging goiter is defined by its lower limit being non-palpable in surgical position.
This retrospective study focuses on the clinical and management aspects of plunging goiters.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the epidemiologic characteristics of plunging goiters.
To analyze the discovery circumstances, clinical signs, and management strategies for this condition.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 43 surgically treated plunging goiter cases over 14 years.
Utilized physical examination, ultrasonography, and cervico-thoracic CT scans for diagnosis and characterization.

Main Results:

Average patient age was 59.3 years; 95.3% had palpable goiters on exam.
CT confirmed plunging goiters in all patients, frequently pre-vascular (73.2%).
Cervical incision was sufficient for 97.5% of surgeries.

Conclusions:

Plunging goiter is a cervical thyroid tumor extending into the mediastinum.
Accurate diagnosis via clinical and paraclinical methods is crucial for effective surgical management.
