Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the daughter...
mTOR Signaling and Cancer Progression03:03

mTOR Signaling and Cancer Progression

The mammalian target of rapamycin or mTOR protein was discovered in 1994 due to its direct interaction with rapamycin. The protein gets its name from a yeast homolog called TOR. The mTOR protein complex in mammalian cells plays a major role in balancing anabolic processes such as the synthesis of proteins, lipids, and nucleotides and catabolic processes, such as autophagy in response to environmental cues, such as availability of nutrients and growth factors.
The mTOR pathway or the...

Summary

MAGE-A3 expression indicates a poorer prognosis in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). This biomarker is linked to advanced disease stages and shorter survival, highlighting its potential clinical significance in DLBCL patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology

Background:

  • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • Identifying prognostic markers is crucial for tailoring DLBCL treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prognostic value of MAGE-A3 expression in DLBCL patients.
  • To correlate MAGE-A3 expression with clinical parameters and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative real-time RT-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to assess MAGE-A3 expression.
  • The study included 28 DLBCL patients.
  • Associations with disease stage, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, International Prognostic Index (IPI) score, treatment response, and overall survival were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • MAGE-A3 expression was significantly associated with advanced DLBCL stages (P < 0.05).
  • MAGE-A3-positive patients exhibited higher serum LDH levels and IPI scores (P = 0.025 and P = 0.004, respectively).
  • MAGE-A3 expression correlated with poor treatment response and significantly shorter overall survival (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • MAGE-A3 expression serves as a significant indicator of poor prognosis in DLBCL.
  • These findings provide novel insights into the role of MAGE-A3 in DLBCL progression and outcomes.
