Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Summary

Most Cambodian Americans meet physical activity guidelines. Access to neighborhood recreational facilities, like parks, is linked to higher physical activity levels in this community.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Exercise Science
  • Community Health

Background:

  • Asian Americans generally exhibit lower physical activity levels compared to non-Latino whites.
  • Limited research exists on physical activity patterns within specific Asian American subgroups.
  • Understanding physical activity in Cambodian Americans is crucial for targeted health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine physical activity levels among Cambodian Americans.
  • To identify individual and environmental factors associated with physical activity in this population.
  • To inform public health strategies for promoting physical activity in the Cambodian American community.

Main Methods:

  • A telephone survey was conducted with 222 Cambodian Americans across three geographic regions in 2010.
  • Physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form.
  • Data collected included demographics, knowledge of benefits, social support, and neighborhood environmental characteristics.

Main Results:

  • A majority of participants reported moderate (40%) or high (48%) physical activity levels, with only 12% reporting low levels.
  • Physical activity was significantly associated with the availability of neighborhood recreational facilities (e.g., parks).
  • No significant association was found between physical activity and neighborhood characteristics like heavy traffic.

Conclusions:

  • Most Cambodian Americans surveyed appear to adhere to current physical activity recommendations.
  • Accessible neighborhood recreational facilities are important facilitators of physical activity for Cambodian Americans.
  • Future studies should validate the IPAQ's reliability and applicability within the Cambodian American population.
