Teeth01:15

Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...
Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.

Urinary Tract Calculi VI: Surgical Management

Procedures for Kidney StonesMedical intervention is necessary when kidney stones or renal calculi are too large to pass spontaneously (typically greater than 5 millimeters) when stones are accompanied by symptomatic infection (such as fever or pyelonephritis), when they impair kidney function, or when they cause persistent symptoms like severe pain, nausea, or urinary retention. Additionally, patients with only one kidney or those who cannot be treated with medical management also require...

Urinary Tract Calculi III: Medical Management

The diagnosis of renal calculi involves several imaging techniques, including non-contrast CT scans and ultrasound. These methods help visualize kidney stones, assess their size and location, and detect possible obstructions. Additionally, Measuring urine pH is useful for diagnosing specific stone types, such as struvite (alkaline pH) and uric acid stones (acidic pH). Cystine stones are primarily linked to cystinuria, a genetic condition. A urinalysis helps detect blood in the urine (hematuria)...
Fractures: Bone Repair01:27

Fractures: Bone Repair

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...

Summary

Supernumerary teeth can cause impacted incisors, a condition affecting 0.5–3.8% of the population. This study details surgical and orthodontic treatments for impacted permanent maxillary incisors caused by supernumerary teeth.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthodontics

Background:

  • Supernumerary teeth are common dental anomalies, potentially causing aesthetic and functional issues.
  • Anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth can lead to delayed eruption or impaction of central incisors.
  • This condition affects 0.5–3.8% of the population, with a higher prevalence in males.

Observation:

  • Two cases of impacted permanent maxillary left central incisor are presented.
  • The impaction was caused by a supernumerary tooth located in the parasagittal pre-maxillary region.
  • Surgical and orthodontic interventions were employed to manage the condition.

Findings:

  • Supernumerary teeth in the pre-maxilla can obstruct the eruption path of adjacent permanent teeth.

  • Successful management involves a combination of surgical removal of the supernumerary tooth and orthodontic repositioning of the impacted incisor.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for optimal outcomes.
  • Implications:

    • Understanding the relationship between supernumerary teeth and incisor impaction aids in diagnosis and treatment planning.
    • Effective management strategies can restore dental aesthetics and function.
    • Further research into the etiology and prevalence of supernumerary teeth is warranted.
