Gestational diabetes mellitus is an heterogeneous and complex disease that involves the maternal biological system, placental tissue and the fetus. It is characterized by glucose intolerance, "first met or recognized in pregnancy." In our country its frequency is around 7%. Important progress has been made in the systematization of diagnostics and treatment, allowing for preventive management of short- and long-term complications for mother and her offspring. Optimum management is to keep at "low risk" maternal glucemic levels, and so to break the future cycle of gestational diabetes mellitus becoming definitive diabetes mellitus.
