Panic Disorder01:27

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent and sudden minutes-long episodes of intense fear, known as panic attacks. These attacks may feel like heart attacks and often happen without warning or a specific cause. They can include symptoms such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, trembling, sweating, dizziness, and a sense of helplessness. During a panic attack, individuals may feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack or are in a...

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Summary

Panic disorder patients exhibit significantly lower serum IgG levels compared to healthy individuals. Lower income correlates with decreased IgG, suggesting a link between socioeconomic factors and immune status in panic disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Psychiatry
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Panic disorder is a significant mental health concern.
  • Immunoglobulin levels may be affected by psychiatric conditions.
  • Socioeconomic and nutritional factors can influence immune function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate serum immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgM, IgA) in panic disorder patients.
  • To assess the relationship between immunoglobulin levels and socioeconomic parameters.
  • To investigate the association between immunoglobulin levels and nutritional status in panic disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Serum immunoglobulin levels were measured using turbidimetry in 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy controls.
  • Socioeconomic data and Body Mass Index (BMI) were collected.
  • Correlative and regression analyses were performed to identify significant relationships.

Main Results:

  • Panic disorder patients showed significantly lower mean serum IgG levels (0.999±0.26 g/L) compared to controls (1.24±0.39 g/L) (p<0.05).
  • No significant differences were observed in IgM and IgA levels between groups (p=0.497, p=0.962).
  • Lower income was significantly associated with decreased serum IgG levels in panic disorder patients (p=0.047).

Conclusions:

  • Panic disorder is associated with reduced serum IgG levels.
  • Income significantly impacts serum IgG levels in individuals with panic disorder.
  • These findings may aid in the diagnosis and treatment of panic disorder.
