Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Vascular Malformations

Background:

  • Spinal extradural cavernous hemangiomas are rare vascular malformations.
  • These lesions can present with diverse neurological deficits.

Observation:

  • Reported are three cases: two thoracic and one lumbar.
  • Presentations included acute spinal cord compression and chronic myelopathy/radiculopathy.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision (total or subtotal) combined with irradiation was the chosen treatment.
  • All patients achieved good functional recovery post-intervention.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering spinal extradural cavernous hemangiomas in the differential diagnosis of spinal cord compression.
  • Emphasizes the efficacy of surgical management and adjuvant radiotherapy for favorable outcomes.
  • Provides insights into clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies for this rare condition.
