Summary

This study found that Yasmin® oral contraceptives (OCs) significantly decreased sexual desire and arousal in women. OCs also reduced intercourse frequency and orgasm, while increasing pain during intercourse.

  • Understanding the specific effects of combined ethinylestradiol and drospirenone OCs on female sexual function is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the sexual behavior and genital vascular effects of a combined oral contraceptive (30 µg ethinylestradiol + 3 mg drospirenone) in young, healthy women.
  • To assess changes in sexual function, genital vascularity, and hormonal parameters after 3 months of OC use.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the McCoy Female Sexuality Questionnaire (MFSQ) to assess sexual behavior.
  • Employed two-dimensional ultrasonography and color Doppler to measure labia minora thickness, vaginal introitus area, and arterial pulsatility index (PI) of clitoral and labia minora arteries.
  • Conducted hormonal assays for estradiol, androstenedione, testosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin.

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in labia minora thickness and vaginal introitus area was observed.
  • The pulsatility index (PI) of the dorsal clitoral artery and posterior labial artery significantly increased.
  • OC use led to a significant decrease in the MFSQ score, reduced frequency of intercourse and orgasm, and increased pain during intercourse.

Conclusions:

  • Treatment with Yasmin® (30 µg EE + 3 mg DRSP) is associated with adverse effects on female sexual function.
  • These effects include decreased libido, reduced spontaneous arousability, diminished sexual intercourse frequency, and lower orgasm frequency.
  • Increased pain during intercourse was also a notable outcome of Yasmin® use.
