Outpatient angiography is a safe and cost-effective procedure. This study found that most patients undergoing outpatient angiography experienced no complications and could safely go home after a short observation period.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Medical Procedures
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Outpatient angiography has become increasingly accepted in recent years.
  • Conventional transfemoral technique is commonly used for angiography.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and cost-effectiveness of outpatient angiography.
  • To assess complication rates and hospital admission following outpatient angiography.

Main Methods:

  • 130 angiographies were performed on an outpatient basis between 1988 and 1989.
  • Patients underwent conventional transfemoral angiography and a six-hour post-procedure observation period.
  • Data on complications and hospital admissions were collected.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Only two minor complications occurred among 130 outpatient angiographies.
  • 25 patients required hospitalization post-procedure, with only two cases related to angiography complications.
  • No patients experienced complications after discharge.

Conclusions:

  • Outpatient angiography is a safe procedure with a low complication rate.
  • The outpatient approach for angiography is considered cost-effective.
  • Short-term hospital observation is adequate for patients undergoing outpatient angiography.
