    Summary

This study on ameloblastoma treatment found that surgical margins depend on histopathological type. Maxillary ameloblastomas may require more aggressive resection for optimal outcomes.

    Cancer Survival Analysis

Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Ameloblastoma is a common odontogenic tumor.
    • Treatment strategies vary based on tumor characteristics and location.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze 46 ameloblastoma cases treated between 1997-2006.
    • To evaluate treatment modalities and define safe surgical margins.
    • To assess recurrence rates based on treatment and histopathological type.

    Main Methods:

    • Incisional biopsy for diagnosis and treatment planning.
    • Histopathological examination of resected specimens to assess bone infiltration.
    • Follow-up of patients for 1-9 years to monitor recurrence.

    Main Results:

    • Recurrence observed in 6 out of 46 cases.
    • Enucleation and curettage showed recurrence in 2 cases.
    • Segmental resection had 3 recurrences, and soft tissue resection for peripheral ameloblastoma had 1 recurrence.

    Conclusions:

    • Safe margin definition is crucial and depends on histopathological ameloblastoma type.
    • More aggressive resection is recommended for maxillary ameloblastomas.
    • Treatment approach should be tailored to individual case characteristics.
