    • Alkaline pre-treatment significantly improved biosorption capacity and performance.
    • Maximum biosorption capacities were 0.68 mmol/g for methylene blue and 0.50 mmol/g for rhodamine B.
    • Methylene blue exhibited a longer breakthrough time and preferential adsorption over rhodamine B.

    Conclusions:

    • Cupressus sempervirens cone chips, after alkaline modification, are effective biosorbents for methylene blue and rhodamine B.
    • The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir-Freundlich models accurately describe the biosorption process.
    • Alkaline pre-treatment enhances the biosorption performance and selectivity for methylene blue, indicating potential for wastewater treatment applications.
