    Summary

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) can cause severe pharyngitis in adults. This case highlights the need to consider HSV-2 in the differential diagnosis of severe throat infections in sexually active individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Virology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Pharyngitis is a common condition, often caused by viral or bacterial infections.
    • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common cause of oral and genital infections.
    • Severe pharyngitis can lead to complications requiring hospitalization.

    Observation:

    • A 21-year-old male presented with severe pharyngitis requiring hospitalization.
    • Hospitalization was for airway patency monitoring and parenteral fluid therapy.
    • The patient engaged in heterosexual orogenital contact (cunnilingus).

    Findings:

    • Diagnosis of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection was confirmed.
    • Diagnosis was based on elevated IgM indirect hemagglutination antibody titers.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The pharyngitis was attributed to HSV-2 acquired through orogenital contact.
  • Implications:

    • HSV-2 should be considered in the differential diagnosis of severe pharyngitis.
    • This case expands the understanding of HSV-2 transmission routes.
    • Highlights the importance of considering STIs in severe throat infections.
