Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...
Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...
Ending Relationships01:28

Ending Relationships

The dissolution of intimate relationships presents complex emotional and psychological challenges, particularly when emotional bonds are strong, the relationship is long-standing, and perceived alternatives are limited. This distress often intensifies in romantic breakups, where the initiator may experience greater turmoil than the rejected partner. Contributing factors include residual attachment, guilt over causing pain, and uncertainty about how to manage the situation. The stress is further...
Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Summary

Web-based alcohol interventions are effective, but high attrition limits success. Improving adherence through strategies like email reminders and flexibility is key to enhancing public health impact.

Area of Science:

  • Digital Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Web-based interventions for problem drinking show effectiveness but suffer from high attrition rates.
  • Understanding attrition is crucial for improving completion rates and the success of online treatment programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine attrition prevalence and pretreatment predictors in open-access users of a web-based problem drinking program.
  • To further explore attrition data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the same web-based program.

Main Methods:

  • Collected attrition data from 885 open-access users and 156 RCT participants in Dutch-speaking regions.
  • Classified noncompleters as those not finishing all 12 treatment sessions; analyzed predictors using logistic regression.
  • Analyzed qualitative data on reasons for noncompletion and suggestions for improvement via thematic analysis.

Main Results:

  • Treatment completers differed significantly between open-access (35.0%) and RCT (45%) groups.
  • Predictors of completion included treatment readiness, gender, education, age, baseline alcohol consumption, and readiness to change.
  • Key reasons for noncompletion were personal issues, dissatisfaction, and perceived self-improvement; suggested strategies included email notifications and flexibility.

Conclusions:

  • Maintaining participant engagement is a significant challenge for web-based alcohol treatment programs, more so than initial effectiveness.
  • Further research should evaluate strategies like email notifications and increased flexibility to reduce attrition.
  • Improving adherence rates in web-based interventions can enhance their success and public health impact.
