Myasthenia Gravis: Diagnostic Tests01:15

Myasthenia Gravis: Diagnostic Tests

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune condition affecting neuromuscular transmission, causing generalized weakness in skeletal muscles. Initial diagnoses rely on patients' signs, symptoms, and medical history. The challenge lies in distinguishing myasthenia from other muscular dystrophies. An important diagnostic feature is the significant improvement of symptoms after administering anticholinesterase inhibitors.
The edrophonium test is a diagnostic tool for myasthenia gravis. It involves...

Summary

Total gangliosides serum levels can predict melanoma progression and patient survival. Higher levels indicate increased tumor growth and poorer outcomes, while decreasing levels suggest improved survival after treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biochemistry
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Gangliosides overexpression is linked to melanoma development.
  • Understanding serum gangliosides may offer prognostic insights.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if total gangliosides serum levels predict melanoma tumor growth.
  • To determine if shed cell gangliosides reflect clinical prognosis in melanoma patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum lipid-associated sialic acid was measured in 761 melanoma patients, 406 with precancerous lesions, and 410 healthy individuals.
  • Analyzed gangliosides changes post-adjuvant therapy (chemo-, immuno-, immunochemotherapy) and correlated with survival.

Main Results:

  • Melanoma patients exhibited higher serum gangliosides than controls.
  • Elevated gangliosides correlated with larger tumor size (Breslow index) and advanced disease stage.
  • Increased gangliosides post-treatment predicted decreased survival; decreased levels predicted improved survival.

Conclusions:

  • Total serum gangliosides may serve as a biomarker for early melanoma complications.
  • Serum gangliosides levels show potential as a prognostic marker for melanoma patient survival.
