Summary

Late onset problem drinking (age 60+) is common in older men, presenting milder issues and better treatment compliance. However, treatment program factors predict compliance more than age of onset.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Problem drinking in older adults is a growing concern.
  • Understanding the characteristics of late-onset alcoholism is crucial for effective intervention.
  • Geriatric alcoholism treatment programs serve a unique patient population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the age of onset of problem drinking in older men.
  • To identify factors associated with late-onset alcoholism (onset at age 60 or later).
  • To compare characteristics and treatment compliance between early-onset and late-onset problem drinkers.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 132 older men (age 60+) in a VA geriatric alcoholism outpatient program.
  • Data collected on demographics, alcohol history, psychological status, and treatment variables.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical analyses were performed to test associations with age of onset.
  • Main Results:

    • Late-onset alcoholism occurred in 15% of the sample (29% of those 65+).
    • Late-onset cases showed milder, more circumscribed alcohol problems, less family alcoholism, and greater psychological stability.
    • Late-onset patients demonstrated higher compliance with outpatient treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Late-onset problem drinking is a significant issue in geriatric populations.
    • Individuals with late-onset alcoholism may have different underlying factors and better treatment adherence.
    • Treatment program variables are stronger predictors of compliance than the age of alcohol problem onset.
