Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology
  • Chemistry

Background:

  • Nanoparticles offer unique properties due to their size.
  • Controlling nanoparticle size and stability is crucial for applications.
  • Cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanoparticles are of interest for various optoelectronic applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize cadmium sulphide nanoparticles using a wet chemical method.
  • To investigate the effect of mercaptoethanol concentration on nanoparticle size and stability.
  • To dope the nanoparticles with manganese.

Main Methods:

  • Wet chemical synthesis involving cadmium chloride and sodium sulphide.
  • Use of mercaptoethanol (ME) as a capping agent.
  • Manganese chloride doping.
  • Characterization using UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Main Results:

  • Particle size was controlled by varying ME concentration, with higher concentrations producing smaller nanoparticles.
  • Synthesized nanoparticles exhibited high stability in water.
  • Doping with manganese chloride was achieved.
  • Particle sizes were determined to be in the range of 2-6 nm.

Conclusions:

  • The wet chemical method provides control over cadmium sulphide nanoparticle size and stability.
  • Mercaptoethanol concentration is a key factor in achieving desired nanoparticle dimensions.
  • The synthesized manganese-doped cadmium sulphide nanoparticles are stable and possess tunable sizes for potential applications.
