National Nursing Organizations II01:30

National Nursing Organizations II

Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...
Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching II: Planning and Implementation

Planning for learning involves the development of a teaching plan. Teaching plans are similar to nursing care plans—both follow the steps of the nursing process. Planning in the teaching process involves setting goals and outcomes. Here, goals identify what a patient needs to achieve to understand a healthcare topic better, whereas the outcomes are the action to be performed by the patient to achieve the goal within a timeframe. For example, if the goal is to educate the patient about insulin...

There are many research methods available to psychologists in their efforts to understand, describe, and explain behavior and the cognitive and biological processes that underlie it.
Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Health Services Research
  • Organizational Development

Background:

  • Established in 2008, the Practice Development and Research Partnership (PDRP) aimed to foster collaboration between an NHS community trust and a higher education institute (HEI).
  • The PDRP sought to cultivate a culture of research and innovation to enhance patient care, experiences, and services through joint practitioner-academic working.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the PDRP by exploring stakeholder perspectives and experiences.
  • To identify opportunities, barriers, and challenges encountered within the partnership.

Main Methods:

  • A qualitative research design was utilized.
  • Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 lead practitioners, 6 academics, and 5 senior managers involved in the PDRP steering group.
  • Thematic analysis was applied to verbatim interview transcripts.

Main Results:

  • The PDRP facilitated professional development for both practitioners and academics.
  • Enhanced partnership working was observed, alongside recognition of the need for a dedicated partnership coordinator.
  • Ambiguities regarding roles, responsibilities, and expectations were identified as a challenge.

Conclusions:

  • Practice Development and Research Partnerships (PDRPs) serve as a valuable mechanism for NHS services and HEls to collaborate.
  • These partnerships can create a productive research environment to address local service and education gaps.
  • Effective PDRPs require clear role definition and dedicated coordination to optimize improvements in patient experience and quality of care.
