Membrane Fluidity

Cell membranes are composed of phospholipids, proteins, and carbohydrates loosely attached to one another through chemical interactions. Molecules are generally able to move about in the plane of the membrane, giving the membrane its flexible nature called fluidity. Two other features of the membrane contribute to membrane fluidity: the chemical structure of the phospholipids and the presence of cholesterol in the membrane.

Summary

A 68-year-old male experienced Descemet

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) is a potential complication following cataract surgery.
  • Standard treatments like air or viscoelastic injection are not always effective for DMD.

Observation:

  • A 68-year-old male developed DMD after temporal clear corneal phacoemulsification.
  • Initial treatments with air and viscoelastic injections failed to resolve the detachment.

Findings:

  • Successful reattachment of Descemet's membrane was achieved using perfluro-n-octane liquid.
  • Visual acuity improved to 20/50 following the procedure.

Implications:

  • Perfluro-n-octane liquid presents a novel and effective treatment option for refractory Descemet's membrane detachment.
