Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of the Nuss procedure on cardiopulmonary function during exercise in teenagers with pectus excavatum.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 49 teenagers with pectus excavatum to 26 controls.
  • Assessed cardiac index, heart rate, VO(2) max, ventricular dimensions, and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) at rest and during exercise before and one year after surgery.

Main Results:

  • Pre-surgery, patients had lower cardiac index and FEV(1) during exercise compared to controls.
  • One year post-Nuss surgery, patients showed significant improvements in cardiac index and FEV(1).
  • Despite improvements, patients' cardiac index remained lower than controls; VO(2) max increased in both groups, but more in controls.

Conclusions:

  • The Nuss operation improves cardiac index and FEV(1) in patients with pectus excavatum.
  • Cardiopulmonary function during exercise is still compromised post-surgery compared to healthy peers.
