    Background:

    • In 1973, a feed supplement contamination incident involved polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) replacing magnesium oxide.
    • This contamination caused widespread harm to farm animals and exposed farm families through consumption of contaminated products.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunologic status of Michigan farm residents exposed to PBBs.
    • To compare immune function in PBB-exposed individuals with unexposed populations.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 45 adult Michigan farm residents with a history of PBB exposure.
    • Compared immune parameters with 46 unexposed Wisconsin dairy farm residents and 79 New York City healthy subjects.
    • Assessed T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, null cells, and in vitro immune function, including PHA-induced blastogenesis.
